Liz Smith mention re: Al Hoffman/Bobby Short/Josh Max
-
March 31, 2005
(Please note the item is inaccurate in that it implies Short was recording an entire CD of Al Hoffman songs, and that the project was "in rehearsals". The CD is to feature a variety of artists, and Short agreed to record "Everything Stops For Tea" and that's it. Rehearsals have not begun as we currently don't have all the artists set yet.)

Bobby Short 1924-2005
-
March 21, 2005
I first met Bobby in 1995, and, in the last year of his life, was working with him to record one of my Great Uncle Al Hoffman's songs, "Everything Stops For Tea". I'd been calling various famous musicians to see if they wanted to be part of a compilation album I'm executive producing. Bobby was the only one who personally called me at home to tell me he would love to be involved in the project. (as opposed to others with whom one communicates through managers, publicists, etc.)
"Hello, Josh! This is Bobby Short." came the gravelly voice on the line. "I'd love to do it!" Of course I nearly dropped dead of surprise and delight.
He was like a roman candle shooting out sparks. I was proud to know him if only marginally, proud that he was going to record one of my great Uncle's songs, and I am saddened beyond words that he's gone, so suddenly.
I am cheered, however, by the fact that this was an 80-year-old singer/pianist who never had a hit record but who could charge and get $95 admission to see him do his thing. I should be so lucky!
RIP Bobby. I'm sorry I didn't get to you sooner. It would have made a hell of a recording.
"Oh, the factories may be roaring
With the boom-a-lack-a zoom-a-lack-wee
But there isn't any roar
When the clock strikes four
Everything stops for tea
Oh, a lawyer in a courtroom
In the middle of an alimony plea
Has to stop and help 'em pour
When the clock strikes four
Everything stops for tea
It's a very good English custom
Though the weather be cold or hot
When you need a little pickup
You'll find a little teacup
Will always hit the spot
You remember Cleopatra
Had a date to meet Mark Antony at three
When he came an hour late
She said "You'll have to wait---
Everything stops for tea."
Oh, they may be playing football
And the crowd is yelling "Kill the referee!"
But no matter what the score
When the clock strikes four
Everything stops for tea
It's a very good English custom
And a stimulant for the brain
When you feel a little weary
A cup'll make you cheery
And it's cheaper than champagne
Oh, the golfer may be golfing
And is just about to make a hole-in-three
But it always gets him sore
When the clock strikes four
Everything stops for tea
Now I know just why Franz Schubert
Didn't finish his unfinished symphony
He might have written more
But the clock struck 4
And everything stops for tea.
The Maxes' "Let It Be So" used in upcoming feature film "Perception"

February 27, 2005
"Perception" stars Piper Perabo (Coyote Ugly, The Adventures of Rocky And Bullwinkle), Aunjanue Ellis (Ray, Undercover Brother) and other folks you've seen on screen and tube.
Synopsis: When a girl who is always playing people against each other is hit by a bus and finds herself in a wheelchair, going through therapy, her friends now have the upper hand. Mischief, mayhem and hijinks aplenty ensue.
"Let It Be So" is off our upcoming album ANOTHER ONE WITH EVERYTHING ON IT. 'Tis a poppy, happy tune sung by Julie, and whose lyrics can be found on, um, our lyrics page.
Look for "Perception" to be released this year.
