This song was recorded last year by Glenn Yarbrough, he of the smash 60s folk group The Limelighters. This is the demo I made for him. I wrote the song in the 90s and fixed the lyrics for Glenn so there wasn't any "cheating" with the rhymes. The recording here has two of the old lyrics.
Trains comin’
People runnin’
Everywhere I look there’s engines gunnin’
Look out look out look out here comes the bus
Gonna run right over us
Pay attention, it’s rush hour here!
24 hours a day I hear
You work the pedals and I’ll steer
I’m takin’ my own sweet time
Ridin’ a ticket bought on my own line
Packin’ a suitcase full of blue skies and sun
The other folks run
Let ‘em scramble
I’ll just ramble
Gonna get where I’m goin’
But while I’m gettin’,
Why not make the journey sweet and sublime?
There’s no point rushing around the joint
I’m takin’ my own sweet time
Grass a’growin’---let me linger
Horns a’blowin’---I’ll just flip ‘em the finger
God won’t punish me, I know
Like me, he’s got nowhere special to go
And so---
I’m takin’ my own sweet time
Ridin’ a ticket bought on my own line
Stop to smell a rose here and there
Plenty of time to spare
Why worry? What’s the hurry?
So if you see me, say “hi!”
I’m the one who looks as though
He’s got some reason and rhyme
Let the masses move their asses
I’m takin’ my own sweet time
